The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has slammed its councillors in Mogale City on the West Rand for voting with the African National Congress (ANC) to pass the budget. The EFF and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillors voted with the ANC to approve the municipal budget.
The Krugersdorp-based municipality was on the verge of being placed under administration after an ANC mayor was voted into the previously-controlled Democratic Alliance (DA) council. The EFF leadership has asked all its structures not to vote with the ANC.
The EFF leadership in a statement says it will await a formal report from the councillors and thereafter institute disciplinary proceedings against them. It accuses them of committing the highest form of defiance of the party’s revolutionary principles in voting with the ANC.
The breakthrough follows the threat of dissolution of the local authority by the provincial Gauteng government after it failed to have enough numbers twice last week to pass the budget.
The ANC had lost Mogale City to a DA coalition with the EFF and smaller parties during last year’s local government elections.
