The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) won five wards in the Rustenburg local municipality and ended up with 24 council seats in its first local government elections.
The ANC retained Rustenburg but, failed to claim an out right majority, they won 43 seats with 48.55 percent. The DA ended with 16 seats and the Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD) won four seats.
A community based movement, Botho Community Movement (BCM) from Boitekong outside Rustenburg won one seat.
The Freedom Front Plus, United Democratic Movement and the African Independent Congress (AIC) each won one seat.
AIC was founded on 12 December 2005 by former ANC members in the Matatiele in protest against the inclusion of the area in the Eastern Cape. They wanted Matatiele reincorporated back into KwaZulu-Natal from the Eastern Cape.
